Romania seeks EU sanctions against platform accused of cyberattacks

Romania has taken a significant step by proposing sanctions against the platform Noname, accusing it of conducting cyberattacks against national targets. This initiative marks the first time Romania has put forward a proposal within the European Union's framework for imposing sanctions related to cyber activities.

The proposal was presented during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, attended by Romania's Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu. Noname is alleged to be responsible for multiple cyber incidents affecting Romanian infrastructure. Russian hackers have previously targeted and disrupted websites of public institutions in Romania and other European countries.

European legal experts have reviewed Bucharest's proposal and confirmed its validity within the EU's sanction procedure. Member states will now deliberate on Romania's request and share their perspectives before any restrictive measures are officially adopted and published. Romania has also provided information regarding individuals suspected of involvement in cyber operations carried out via the Noname platform.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Romanian authorities, in cooperation with the National Directorate for Cybersecurity and other national and European institutions, are committed to addressing cyber threats. They affirm their continued response to any cyberattack or hostile action directed against targets under Romania's jurisdiction.
