Romania Shuts Second Nuclear Reactor Amid Record Low Danube Water Levels

Romania's nuclear energy production is facing significant challenges as the country begins the process of shutting down a second reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. The decision comes in response to critically low water levels in the Danube River, a vital resource for the plant's cooling systems.

Nuclearelectrica, the state-owned nuclear energy producer, had previously shut down one of the plant's two 706-megawatt reactors at the end of July due to the receding Danube. The Cernavodă plant is a crucial component of Romania's energy infrastructure, supplying approximately one-fifth of the nation's electricity.

In response to the energy shortages exacerbated by the low river levels, Romania declared a state of emergency within its energy sector in August. Authorities have requested both companies and households to voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption, particularly during evening hours. The Ministry of Energy has activated a 330-megawatt lignite-fired power plant to help compensate for the shortfall.

To further mitigate the crisis, Romania is relying on increased wind and hydropower generation, dependent on available reservoir water. The national power grid maintains a cross-border capacity of around 4,000 megawatts to facilitate electricity imports. European energy operators are reportedly coordinating to ensure supply security across networks affected by the prevailing weather conditions.
