Romania warns citizens of potential travel chaos in Portugal due to June 3 strike

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has alerted citizens planning to travel to Portugal about a nationwide general strike scheduled for June 3. The strike, announced by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP), is expected to cause major disruptions, particularly in the transportation sector.

Travelers should anticipate significant issues with public transport across Portugal. This includes the possibility of considerable delays or outright cancellations for flights, trains, and ferries. Road traffic, including on major national and municipal routes, may also be affected.

Several unions, including flight attendants represented by the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel (SNPVAC), have joined the strike. SNPVAC president Ricardo Penarróias indicated that approximately 500 flights could be canceled. Airlines such as TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, and Ryanair may experience disruptions, although Ryanair stated it does not anticipate major problems.

TAP Air Portugal is allowing affected passengers to rebook flights free of charge. The strike is a protest against proposed government labor reforms that unions argue would facilitate dismissals and outsourcing. Employees in public transport, healthcare, and education sectors are also participating, signaling potential disruptions across multiple services.
