Explosion at German railway station injures two teenagers as police investigate cause

An explosion in a hall at Augsburg’s central railway station sent two teenagers to hospital and triggered a major police operation in southern Germany.

The blast occurred at about 5 a.m. local time on Wednesday, according to Bavarian police. A 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy suffered acoustic trauma caused by the force of the explosion.

Authorities have not identified the object or device that exploded. Police also found a suspicious object inside the station, prompting the temporary closure of the building and the suspension of rail services. Public transport in the area was affected as officers secured the site.

Specialists from Bavaria’s State Criminal Police Office were deployed, including a robot used to examine and, if necessary, neutralize explosive devices. Officials have not disclosed the nature of the suspicious object or what caused the blast.

The investigation is examining both the origin of the object that exploded and how it came to be at the station. There was no official indication yet of whether the explosion happened accidentally or was deliberate. Augsburg’s main station serves numerous regional routes and is an important transport hub in Bavaria, about 55 kilometers northwest of Munich.
