Romanian Air Force shoots down unidentified drone in national airspace

Romania's Air Force has downed an unidentified drone that penetrated its airspace, according to the Ministry of National Defense in Bucharest. The incident occurred over a sparsely populated region near Padina in Buzau County, eastern Romania.

An F-16 fighter jet was scrambled and successfully eliminated the intruding object with a missile. The Ministry confirmed the event on its website, noting that this is the first time a drone has been shot down within Romanian airspace. The origin and affiliation of the downed drone have not yet been disclosed.

Romania shares a significant border, approximately 600 kilometers long, with Ukraine, which is currently under Russian assault. In recent times, numerous Russian drones have been detected entering Romanian airspace, prompting the country to establish legal frameworks for their interception last year. Concerns persist regarding the potential danger posed by falling debris from downed aircraft.

During the operation, two Italian fighter jets and another Romanian F-16 were also deployed from the Fetesti airbase. The Ministry stated that the public was warned about the risk of falling debris. Defense Minister Radu Miruta commended the pilots for their "professionalism, composure, and quick reaction" in neutralizing the unauthorized drone.
