Romanian Air Traffic Agency's Accounts Frozen Until 2027 Amid Pfizer Debt Crisis

Romania's air traffic control agency, ROMATSA, is on the brink of financial collapse, with its accounts frozen until 2027. This drastic situation arises from a court order related to Romania's non-fulfillment of a COVID-19 vaccine contract with Pfizer, leading to a €600 million debt. The frozen funds are revenue collected through EUROCONTROL, ROMATSA's primary source of income, as the agency is not state-funded.

Adrian Cojoc, ROMATSA's general director, warned of the impending financial crisis. The court has scheduled a review of ROMATSA's request to unfreeze its revenue for January 4, 2027, leaving the agency without funds for the foreseeable future. This predicament poses a significant threat to national air traffic management, as ROMATSA handles all flights within Romanian airspace, including coordination with military operations.

Security policy expert Hari Bucur Marcu described the situation as a "false problem" that Romanian authorities have mismanaged. He emphasized that a solution is inevitable given ROMATSA's crucial role in ensuring flight safety and its civil-military collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense. Marcu criticized the authorities' incompetence, stating that such a situation should never have occurred. The potential disruption to air traffic control could have severe consequences for both civilian airlines and military aviation, including F-16 operations.
