Romanian Firefighters Save Greek Monastery and Homes from Wildfire

A contingent of Romanian firefighters successfully halted the spread of a wildfire in Greece, preventing it from engulfing residential areas and a historic monastery. The specialized national module, deployed through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, worked tirelessly in the Loumpa area of Attica.

The intervention began on the evening of August 3, as the fire raged across a significant area. The Romanian team's primary objective was to stop the fire's advance towards the threatened homes and the monastery. Their efforts ensured that the flames did not reach these structures, protecting the local community and the religious site.

Fighting the blaze presented considerable challenges. Firefighters faced restricted access for their vehicles in the operational sector and navigated the dangers posed by high-voltage power lines. These conditions necessitated constant adaptation of their strategy and the implementation of additional safety measures for the personnel involved.

The mission involved close cooperation with Greek authorities. After successfully containing the main threat, the Romanian module remained on standby as of the morning of August 4. They maintained a presence in the sector to continuously monitor the area and be ready to respond immediately to any rekindling of fires, awaiting further instructions from the Greek authorities.
