Romanian man arrested for soliciting $105,000 in bribes to resolve DNA cases

A man faces 30 days in pre-trial detention after prosecutors accused him of soliciting bribes totaling $105,000 to influence cases at Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).

Prosecutors allege the suspect, identified as Ș.V.A., received $54,000 of the promised amount. He is accused of promising to intervene with prosecutors and police to ensure favorable outcomes in criminal cases. The alleged offenses occurred in November 2024 and May 2026.

In one instance, he reportedly asked for $40,000 and received $28,000, claiming he could influence a case. In another, he allegedly prompted another person to solicit $40,000 from a mayor, with the money intended for a prosecutor to neglect their duties. He received $6,000 for this alleged intervention.

Further investigations revealed he solicited an additional $25,000, claiming influence over a DNA prosecutor and commissioner to expedite a case involving alleged corruption by officials in Buzău county. He was apprehended on August 21, 2026, receiving $10,000 as the first installment.

Authorities noted that Ș.V.A. has been previously convicted for similar offenses in three other DNA-handled cases. The DNA emphasized that the indictment is a procedural step and does not infringe on the presumption of innocence.
