Romanian Mayor Found Hanged; Second Such Tragedy in Alba County

A tragic discovery was made on July 30, 2026, when the mayor of Bucerdea Grânoasă commune in Alba county, Romania, was found hanged in the attic of his home. The victim, identified as Vasile Sevestrean, was serving his first term as mayor, having been elected on the AUR party list.

Local police were alerted by a woman who found her husband deceased. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the report, stating that the preliminary examination of the body revealed no signs of violence. The body was transported to the Alba County Legal Medicine Service for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

On July 30, 2026, around 4:30 PM, police from the 5th Rural Police Station of Blaj were notified via SNUAU 112 by a 53-year-old woman from the village of Bucerdea Grânoasă, regarding her husband being found hanged in the attic of their home.

This incident marks the second time in recent history that a mayor in Alba county has died by suicide in a similar fashion. Last year, the former mayor of Bucerdea Grânoasă, who had held the position since the commune's establishment in 2006, died at the age of 64 after being trapped under a trailer during agricultural work. Additionally, two years prior, the then-serving mayor of Vințu de Jos commune, also in Alba county and in his first term, was found hanged in an outbuilding of his residence.
