Romanian PNL Leader Meets EPP President, Discusses Pro-European Future

Ilie Bolojan, leader of Romania's National Liberal Party (PNL), held a significant meeting with Manfred Weber, president of the European People's Party (EPP). The discussion focused on Romania's future trajectory and the crucial responsibility shouldered by pro-European parties amidst the nation's current political climate.

I had a very good discussion with Manfred Weber about the future of Romania, about the responsibility of pro-European parties and the need to regain people's trust through seriousness, reforms, and results.

Bolojan articulated his vision for Romania, stressing the necessity of "seriousness, reforms, and results" to rebuild public confidence. He contrasted this approach with populism and empty promises, asserting that governing requires taking responsibility for decisions and their consequences. Bolojan reiterated the PNL's commitment to its center-right, pro-European, and reformist identity, advocating for equal rules, efficient institutions, and reduced waste.

I thanked him for the constant support that the European People's Party and he himself have offered Romania over all these years.

He expressed gratitude for the EPP's consistent support for Romania, citing assistance with Schengen accession, the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and attracting European funds. Bolojan underscored that Romania needs strong European partners and that the PNL must continue its reform agenda.

Romania needs responsibility, not populism.

Manfred Weber, in turn, commended Bolojan's leadership. He described Bolojan as leading with "determination and responsibility, putting people first." Weber specifically acknowledged Bolojan's efforts in deficit reduction, economic stabilization, securing PNRR funding, and promoting reforms and modernization, characterizing these actions as the "most difficult, but correct and pro-European path."
