Romanian President attends launch of new corvette with Turkish counterpart in Istanbul

Romanian President Nicușor Dan joined Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul for the launch ceremony of the HISAR-class corvette "Contraamiral August Roman," a new vessel destined for the Romanian Naval Forces.

The ceremony, held at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard, marked a significant step in bolstering Romania's maritime defense capabilities in the Black Sea region. President Dan was accompanied by Cătălin Predoiu and Radu Miruță for the event, which began with the playing of national anthems.

During the event, the two presidents held a meeting to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional security concerns. Their talks also focused on preparations for the upcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara from July 7-8.

According to the Presidential Administration, the newly launched corvette will undergo final stages before deployment to Romania. The vessel is expected to significantly enhance Romania's defense and reaction capacity in the Black Sea. It is equipped for complex operations, including surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare, and is designed to protect critical infrastructure and maritime communications.

The "Contraamiral August Roman" is built to NATO standards and is poised to play a crucial role in reinforcing the alliance's eastern flank, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership between Romania and Turkey in ensuring regional stability.
