Romanian President Chooses Fox News for Key Message on Russia and US Ties

Romanian President Nicușor Dan strategically chose Fox News to deliver a critical message regarding Romania's security concerns and its alliance with the United States. In an editorial titled "I am the president of one of America's most trusted allies. Here's how we face Russia," published on the influential American news channel's platform, Dan alerted that the Russian Federation's threat to Euro-Atlantic security is escalating.

He underscored Romania's vulnerable position as a NATO member situated on the eastern flank and bordering Ukraine. Political consultant George Rîpă noted that the choice of Fox News was deliberate, citing the network's significant audience in the U.S. news segment and its influence within the Trump administration. Dan's message focused on Romania's readiness to assume greater responsibilities within NATO, stating that Bucharest is not seeking additional support from Washington but is committed to enhancing its own defense efforts, including reaching a defense spending target of 5% of GDP by 2035.

Russia is a growing threat that America and Europe cannot afford to ignore. Romanian airspace has been violated dozens of times by drones in recent months. According to press reports, U.S. intelligence services believe Russia could test NATO's resolve with a limited move against an allied country.

The editorial detailed Romania's substantial military investments, including the Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase project, estimated at €2.5-3 billion. It also listed current and planned acquisitions of American military equipment such as Patriot and HIMARS systems, F-16 fighter jets, Abrams tanks, and 32 F-35A aircraft. Dan clarified that these acquisitions are not merely a shopping list but a strategic decision to ensure interoperability with American and NATO platforms, enabling Romanian forces to be ready from day one of a crisis.

However, Dan's selection of Fox News has sparked criticism from various analysts, former supporters, commentators, and journalists. They accuse him of moving closer to the Republican sphere and the Trump administration. Rîpă, however, contested the frequent characterization of Fox News as a purely "Republican television" in Romania, suggesting that while the channel has a clear right-wing orientation, its direct association with the Republican Party is an oversimplification.
