Bucharest: President Nicușor Dan has taken a significant step forward in combating gender-based violence by promulgating the Law for the Prevention and Combating of Femicide. This landmark legislation, signed into law on April 21, 2026, directly confronts the pervasive issue of violence against women, a problem that has, for too long, been relegated to the shadows of public discourse and policy.

He articulated that violence against women represents one of the most degrading forms of behavior, and its persistent underestimation has led to tragic consequences. The new law is designed not only to impose harsher penalties but also to implement proactive measures, acknowledging that a comprehensive approach is necessary to break the cycle of violence. The law defines femicide legally, categorizing it under aggravated circumstances for qualified homicide, with penalties ranging from 15 to 25 years imprisonment or life imprisonment. Furthermore, it mandates the annual collection and publication of data on femicide and precursor violence, and provides protection for orphans of femicide victims. Crucially, the law also introduces preventive education in schools, focusing on gender equality, non-violent relationships, and the combatting of violence, aiming to foster a cultural shift towards respect and safety for women.
