Romanian PSD Complains to EU Parliament Over PNL's Judicial Remarks

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Romania has lodged a complaint with the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) concerning recent statements made by the National Liberal Party (PNL) about the country's judicial system. PSD alleges that PNL's declarations undermine judicial independence and the rule of law.

In a statement, the PSD delegation to the European Parliament expressed concern over what it termed "attacks" by PNL against the Romanian judiciary. The party believes these statements raise questions about adherence to the fundamental EU values of judicial independence, separation of powers, and the rule of law.

PSD has requested that the LIBE Committee's president and coordinators analyze the situation. They propose discussing it within the European dialogue on the rule of law, potentially including a debate in the LIBE Committee and the Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG).

The PSD clarified that they are not asking the European Parliament to intervene in ongoing court cases. Instead, they want an examination of PNL's public statements, which they argue could negatively impact the judiciary's independence. The party also referenced a warning from Romania's Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) about such attacks potentially eroding public trust in the justice system.
