Romanians Buy More Travel Insurance Despite Lower Incomes

Romanians are demonstrating a growing concern for financial protection during their travels, evidenced by a significant increase in travel insurance purchases despite a decrease in personal incomes. The total insured sum for Romanian travelers surpassed 85 billion lei in 2025, marking a 13% rise from the previous year, according to an analysis of members of the National Union of Insurance Companies in Romania (UNSAR). This trend highlights a heightened awareness of the risks associated with vacations, ranging from flight cancellations and lost luggage to unexpected medical emergencies abroad. Marius Constantinescu, an insurance broker with over 15 years of experience, shared insights into this phenomenon with "Adevărul." He noted that recent experiences, such as canceled flights, wildfires, storms, lost baggage, and medical issues encountered during holidays, have made people more attentive to potential disruptions. "I think Romanians have started to look at holidays with different eyes. It's no longer just about the hotel, plane, and luggage, but also the peace of mind that if a problem arises, they won't have to bear all the costs alone," Constantinescu explained. He cautioned that the most significant mistake travelers make is selecting a policy based solely on price, urging them to consult with brokers or specialists to ensure the coverage adequately meets the specifics of their trip. Constantinescu emphasized the importance of considering factors like traveling with children, layovers, car rentals, cruises, or engaging in sports and leisure activities when choosing a policy, as these can influence the required coverage.
