Romantic Comedy 'One Night Only' Debuts at No. 1 in North America

The romantic comedy 'One Night Only' has captured the top spot at the North American box office, grossing $5.7 million during its opening weekend from August 7-9. The film, starring Oscar-nominated Monica Barbaro and BAFTA-nominated Will Poulter, presents a unique premise set in a dystopian version of New York City.

In this imagined New York, the city permits premarital sexual activity only one night per year, leading to a series of chance encounters between two strangers. The film is directed by Will Gluck, known for 'Easy A' and 'Friends with Benefits,' who guides the audience on an unexpected journey to find true love during the city's least romantic night.

The screenplay, penned by Travis Braun, garnered significant attention by topping the prestigious 2024 Black List, which highlights the year's most exceptional unproduced scripts. Despite its dystopian setting, the production team chose to film on location in New York, utilizing the city's distinctive atmosphere to enhance the narrative.

Actor Will Poulter commented on the filming experience, stating, "New York has a magic to it. It's crowded everywhere, the whole city is like a maze, but it's also very cinematic, and the director captured that perfectly." The film is set to premiere in Taiwan on August 19, coinciding with the Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's Day.
