Roof box opens on highway, causing multi-car crash and injuries

A family's road trip took a dangerous turn on the A8 highway in Upper Bavaria when their roof box unexpectedly opened, scattering luggage across the lanes. The incident triggered a multi-vehicle collision, leaving a 35-year-old mother seriously injured and requiring transport by rescue helicopter to a hospital. Her husband and four-year-old son also suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The chaos began when the roof box of a 34-year-old driver's car sprang open, spilling bags and clothing onto the busy highway near Weyarn. A 63-year-old driver behind him had to brake sharply, leading to a rear-end collision with the family's car. The impact then caused the family's vehicle to hit another car, and a fourth driver was unable to stop in time, colliding with the family's car from behind.

Authorities estimate the total damage from the accident at approximately 45,000 euros. The highway was completely closed for about an hour in the direction of Munich, causing significant traffic disruptions.
