Rotten meat, fungus on veggies: Bengaluru's 3-star, 5-star hotels in soup over food safety violations

Several luxury hotels in Bengaluru are facing scrutiny after a special inspection drive uncovered significant food safety violations. The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) department flagged issues ranging from unhygienic storage to fungal growth on vegetables and inadequate segregation of food items.

During surprise inspections across 26 hotels, officials found a range of concerning violations. These included the discovery of rotten meat, chicken, and fish, as well as expired bakery products and milk. Inspectors also noted improper food handling, storage conditions, and non-compliance with labeling requirements.

The FDA has initiated action against the implicated three-star and five-star hotels, sending notices to the Food Business Operators. Adjudication proceedings will commence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The inspections were prompted by a rise in public complaints regarding poor food quality and hygiene practices.

Food samples, including tea powder, chicken, mutton, fish, edible oil, and various spices, were collected and sent for analysis. The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister had directed the formation of special teams to conduct these surprise checks following numerous complaints shared on social media and through other channels.
