Rotterdam mayor rappels 100 meters to fulfill election pledge

Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten conquered her fear of heights by rappelling 100 meters down the city's iconic Euromast tower, fulfilling a unique election promise made to voters. Under a typically gray Dutch sky, Schouten, dressed in sportswear, approached the observation tower with a determined expression, a slight smile betraying the nerves of the moment.

Her daring descent was contingent on voter turnout in the March municipal elections exceeding that of 2022. With a turnout of 40.7% compared to 38.9% four years prior, the condition was met, obligating the mayor to face her "enormous" phobia of heights. While other politicians might opt for less daunting pledges like tattoos or marathons, Schouten chose a challenge that pushed her personal boundaries.

"For democracy," the 48-year-old affiliated with Christian Union declared. She admitted the first step over the railing was the most difficult, describing it as "very unnatural and very scary." However, as she descended, adrenaline surged, and she began to relax midway down. Spectators below cheered her on, offering encouragement throughout the final meters of her safe landing.

Upon touching the ground, Schouten visibly relaxed, joking, "I need a moment to land." She became the first female mayor of Rotterdam, the Netherlands' second-largest city with approximately 680,000 inhabitants, in October 2024. The city is known for its major port and its diverse population, with over half of its residents having migrant origins and around 170 nationalities represented.
