Rubio assures Gulf allies any Iran deal will protect their security

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reassured Gulf allies on Thursday that any agreement reached with Iran would prioritize their security interests. Rubio concluded a Middle East tour aimed at convincing skeptical regional partners to accept the Trump administration's preliminary accord with Tehran.

Speaking at a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, Rubio stated that Washington seeks lasting peace with Iran. He emphasized that such a peace would not compromise the security and prosperity of allies in the oil-rich region, who fear the current accord is too lenient.

Iran has a history of conflict in the region, including clashes with powerful armies like the U.S. and Israel. During past conflicts, Iran effectively controlled the vital Strait of Hormuz, significantly disrupting oil flows and impacting global energy markets and the broader economy.
