Rumesh Tharanga Makes History with Sri Lanka’s First Diamond League Javelin Title

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced the throw that made Sri Lankan athletics history. His 89.04-meter effort in the third round won the men’s javelin at the 2026 Diamond League final in Brussels and made him the first Sri Lankan athlete to claim the prestigious title.

The 23-year-old took the lead after Poland’s Dawid Wegner had thrown a personal-best 87.47 meters in the same round. Tharanga’s mark remained unmatched, giving him victory by 1.57 meters. Wegner finished second, while Trinidad and Tobago’s former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott took third with 83.99 meters. Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.70 meters.

Tharanga began with 80.42 meters and followed with 79.73 before finding his winning form. He then threw 85.96 and 85.76 meters, before fouling his final attempt. He said the cold conditions had prevented an even longer throw. “Honestly, I couldn't get a big throw today because the weather conditions were quite difficult, it was very cold... so that's why I couldn't reach a big distance,” he said.

The title capped a remarkable campaign. Tharanga entered the final as the circuit leader after strong performances throughout the season, including a 92.62-meter throw in Rome in June that set a Sri Lankan national record and led the world at the time. He also won Commonwealth Games gold earlier in the season.
