'Run, Rose, Run' 37th anniversary reunion celebrates classic film's success

Taiwan's beloved tearjerker film, 'Run, Rose, Run' (魯冰花), is experiencing a successful revival on the big screen, marking its 37th anniversary with a box office performance surpassing 3.7 million TWD in under two weeks. The film's enduring emotional impact continues to draw audiences, with special "karaoke" screenings reportedly leaving viewers teary-eyed.

To commemorate the anniversary, a special reunion event is scheduled for Sunday, August 26, at the Ximending Ambassador Theatre in Taipei. This gathering will reunite key figures from the original production. Cinematographer Lee Ping-bin, a former Golden Horse Film Festival chairman, is flying back from Los Angeles specifically for the event. He shares a long history with director Yang Li-kuo, having collaborated on earlier works before 'Run, Rose, Run.'

Joining Lee and Yang at the reunion will be supporting actress Lee Shu-chen and the original singer of the theme song, Tseng Shu-chin. The National Film and Audiovisual Heritage Center has also successfully located Chang Tsai-ming, who was responsible for the film's art direction and served as an assistant director. Chang, who also contributed art for the acclaimed film 'A City of Sadness,' created the iconic crayon drawings in 'Run, Rose, Run,' including the memorable "tea worm" illustration.

Director Yang Li-kuo recalled the challenging filming of a scene where the young stars, Lee Shu-chen and Huang Kun-hsuan, navigated a raft on the water. To ensure their safety, members of the Saisiyat indigenous community, skilled in water, secretly assisted by staying beneath the raft during filming. This behind-the-scenes dedication contributed to creating the unforgettable water scenes that remain a highlight of the film.

The re-release has also unveiled a new "Tianya" (Horizon) poster, designed by Chen Shih-chuan. The poster features a melancholic blue hue, depicting the siblings and their dog on a raft, drifting away from worldly troubles into a serene landscape, capturing the film's poignant essence. The reunion event aims to express gratitude to the fans who have supported the film throughout its journey.
