Rural life: More than 90 village caretakers active in Thuringia

In Thuringia, Germany, a growing network of "village caretakers" is actively working to strengthen community bonds in rural areas. Currently, 94 state-funded caretakers are active across eight districts, a threefold increase since 2022. These individuals serve as central points of contact for residents, organizing village festivals, afternoon game sessions, and offering crucial help with everyday challenges.

The initiative, supported by the state's social ministry, aims to promote solidarity and connection between different generations within villages. The program is flexible, allowing municipalities to hire caretakers as full-time employees, offer them stipends as volunteers, or engage them through mini-jobs.

Caretakers come from diverse backgrounds, including those still in the workforce and retirees. Many possess extensive local knowledge and established networks, which are invaluable for their roles. The program also welcomes newcomers to the community, encouraging them to become involved and contribute to village life.
