Russia Asks Finland to Ban Protests at Embassy During Elections

Russia is particularly concerned about potential demonstrations coinciding with the election period. However, Finnish police have indicated they will not issue a blanket ban on protests. They maintain that the right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental freedom. Finnish parliamentarian Timo Heinonen expressed support for the public's right to protest, suggesting that elections often serve as a catalyst for such demonstrations. A similar protest occurred outside the Russian embassy during Russia's presidential elections in 2024. The Finnish authorities are balancing Russia's security concerns with their commitment to democratic rights.
