Russia Claims 635 Drones Downed, Yet Fires Erupt at Russian Facilities

Russia claims its air defenses intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones in a single night, yet fires broke out at industrial facilities and a residential building, underscoring a paradox in the ongoing drone conflict.

Despite Moscow's assertion of a massive defensive success, reports indicate that fires erupted in the industrial zone of Ufa and at a logistics warehouse in Samara. Tragically, two people died in Engels, Saratov region, when a residential building was struck. The Russian Defense Ministry did not disclose the total number of drones launched by Ukraine, making it impossible to independently verify the claimed 635 interceptions.

Governor of Samara, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, confirmed a fire at a facility belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, located approximately 800 kilometers from the front lines. In Bashkortostan, Governor Radiy Khabirov acknowledged a drone downed over Ufa's industrial area, which subsequently caught fire. In Engels, a city housing a strategic military airbase, Governor Roman Busargin reported the fatal residential strike.

These incidents, occurring across two separate waves of attacks, reveal a critical vulnerability in Russia's defenses. While hundreds of drones may be neutralized, the successful penetration by even a fraction can cause significant disruption, particularly if they target sensitive infrastructure like oil refineries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously stated that Ukrainian drones targeted three oil refineries in Bashkortostan, nearly 1,600 kilometers from Ukraine, raising questions about the reach and impact of these strikes.
