Russia claims downing 426 Ukrainian drones overnight; fire erupts at logistics center

Russian air defense forces claim to have intercepted and destroyed 426 Ukrainian drones during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, an assertion that, if accurate, would represent one of the most significant aerial barrages Moscow has reported in recent times. The drones were reportedly intercepted over numerous Russian regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Orel, Kaluga, Tula, Lipetsk, Voronezh, Tambov, Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Rostov, Moscow, and Krasnodar, as well as over the illegally annexed Crimean Peninsula, according to Russia's Ministry of Defense.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet confirmed or commented on Russia's claims regarding the drone interceptions. However, one of the reported drone attacks did cause a substantial fire at a logistics center belonging to the online retailer Wildberries in the city of Kotovsk, located in the Tambov region. The blaze reportedly spread over an area exceeding 100,000 square meters, and one employee sustained injuries.

Regional governor Evgeny Pervyshov stated that the facility was hit during a "massive drone attack." Local authorities intervened to contain and extinguish the fire, and investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident are underway.

This intense drone activity coincides with reports of a discreet visit by CIA Director William Burns to Moscow on Tuesday. American media outlets suggest Burns conveyed a warning from the U.S. administration to the Kremlin regarding potential attacks on Europe. Axios reported that the U.S. had informed Ukraine of the visit and requested Kyiv to suspend attacks within Russia during Burns' presence.

Meanwhile, Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova indicated that Russia and Ukraine are engaged in discussions for another "quite significant" prisoner exchange. While details regarding the number of prisoners or the timeline for such an exchange remain undisclosed, it signifies ongoing, albeit complex, communication channels between the warring nations.
