Russia Cornered in Ukraine War, Lacks Exit Strategy: Lithuanian Diplomat

Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius asserts that Russia has driven itself into a corner in the Ukraine war, facing a stalemate with no clear path to victory or withdrawal. "They have brought the country into a dead end. They are incapable of fighting further, they don't know how and don't want to end the war," Linkevičius stated on Facebook, referencing a nervous laugh from Vladimir Putin during a meeting with sailors about post-operation plans.

Linkevičius believes Russia's current tactic of delaying the conflict, hoping Ukraine will falter, is a dangerous gamble that could severely damage its own economy. He noted increasing warnings from international and domestic experts about the potential collapse of the Russian economy. The diplomat also cautioned that a cornered and panicked Russia might resort to "inadequate asymmetric, hybrid attacks and provocations."

While acknowledging that no one desires a "hot war," Linkevičius stressed that other avenues to pressure Russia remain largely untapped. He specifically pointed to the United States, urging for more significant sanctions against Russia and increased military assistance to Ukraine. The diplomat observed ongoing "diplomatic searches and other maneuvers" within the U.S. regarding its role in the conflict, noting that the U.S. has not joined a recent UN statement condemning Russian aggression and calling for a ceasefire.
