Russia hits drone demonstration near Kyiv, killing 10

Russia launched a strike on a defense industry event near Kyiv on Friday, targeting a demonstration of aerial defense technologies, including drones. The attack, which occurred in the Bucha district approximately 20-30 kilometers from central Kyiv, resulted in 10 fatalities and around 100 injuries, according to Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko, who called it a war crime.

The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged the strike, stating it used "high-precision long-range weapons" to target "a demonstration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones), including promising ones, of Ukrainian and foreign production, used to strike civilian targets in Russia." Moscow claimed that leading defense industry officials and Ukrainian military members were present at the site, allegedly planning and carrying out strikes on Russian territory.

Acting regional military administration head Ruslan Oliinyk confirmed the strike hit a privately operated military training site. Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned the strikes, particularly one hitting what she described as "Latvia's Honorary Consulate" in Slovyansk, and announced plans to summon Russia's envoy to the EU and propose further sanctions against Russia's military-industrial complex.

Elsewhere, five people were reported killed in the eastern region of Slovyansk. Ukraine's energy company Ukrenergo reported damage to power plants in five regions, leaving approximately 150,000 people without power in the Chernihiv region alone due to an attack on a facility there. In response, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted warehouses of the online retail giant Wildberries in St. Petersburg, the Leningrad region, and Simferopol in occupied Ukraine. Over Romania, NATO jets downed a stray drone on Friday morning.
