Russia issues arrest warrant for Boris Nemtsov's daughter

Russian authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of slain opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, marking a significant escalation in the Kremlin's efforts to silence dissent.

The warrant, issued by a court, states that Nemtsova is wanted for her activities with an organization based in Germany that Russia has designated as "undesirable." The court also specified that if apprehended in Russia, she should be held in pre-trial detention for two months, or extradited.

In April 2024, Russia's Ministry of Justice added the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, established by Nemtsova in Germany, to its list of "undesirable" foreign and international organizations. If convicted, Nemtsova could face up to six years in prison.

Nemtsova responded to the news on Instagram, posting a photo of herself outside the headquarters of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. "Now I am famous," she wrote, adding that she had just arrived in Bonn, a city where she founded the foundation after her father's assassination in 2015. In a comment to Deutsche Welle, Nemtsova stated that Russian authorities are increasingly trying to silence independent voices.
