Russia unleashes major missile, drone attack on Ukraine, killing four

Russia unleashed a massive missile and drone assault on Ukraine, killing at least four people and wounding dozens across the country. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, experienced multiple explosions throughout the early morning hours of Sunday as the air force reported a barrage involving 600 drones and 90 missiles.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed two deaths and dozens wounded in the capital, while the head of the surrounding Kyiv region reported two additional fatalities. The air force stated that its defenses intercepted 549 drones and 55 missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Russia deployed a nuclear-capable hypersonic "Oreshnik" missile during the attack, criticizing it as a sign of Russian desperation.

Russia's defense ministry confirmed the use of "Oreshnik" ballistic missiles, along with other types, in retaliation for what it called "terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure on Russian territory." This statement followed Ukraine's own drone barrage on Starobilsk in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine, which Moscow reported killed at least 18 people.

Residential buildings in Kyiv were shaken by the blasts, and many residents sought shelter in underground metro stations. Fires broke out in several locations, including a school and a business center, trapping some individuals. Beyond Kyiv, Russian strikes also wounded people in the Kharkiv, Cherkasy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
