Russian Attacks Ignite Fire at Historic Kyiv Monastery; Nine Dead Nationwide

A new wave of Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine has caused widespread damage, with the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, catching fire. Military Governor Tymur Tkatschenko reported "serious damage" to the monastery grounds.

Nationwide, Ukrainian authorities stated that at least nine people were killed and dozens injured. Media reports indicate that Russian forces utilized more than 50 missiles and approximately 500 drones in the assaults. Images circulating on social media showed flames erupting from the roof of the Dormition Cathedral within the ancient monastery complex. It remains unclear whether the fire was caused by direct hits or falling debris from air defense responses.

Explosions were heard across Kyiv, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko reporting impacts in three districts, at least 23 injuries, widespread power outages, and fires, including about 30 vehicles reportedly engulfed in flames. Military Governor Tkatschenko noted over 40 impacts in the capital, with initial reports of four fatalities.

Heavy shelling was also reported in other Ukrainian regions. The Kyiv Independent, citing Governor Oleh Synjehubow, reported that five rescuers were killed and four others injured in Kharkiv due to the air raids. Dnipro also reported at least one injury. These figures could not be independently verified at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, Russian sources reported casualties from Ukrainian drone attacks on their territory.
