Russian intelligence agencies should expect a Ukrainian drone in their offices, EU defence commissioner says

Russian intelligence agencies should expect the possibility of a Ukrainian drone reaching their offices, European Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said after a Russian strike damaged the Security Service of Ukraine building in Kyiv.

“Putin brought war back to Russia: he escalates, then the Ukrainians answer with mirror measures. That's how Putin got the majority of refineries in Russia destroyed, lost international flights, and now the KGB and GRU [Main Intelligence Directorate] will wait for a Ukrainian drone to fly into their offices,” Kubilius wrote on X on 5 September.

The commissioner was referring to the Russian drone strike on the Security Service of Ukraine building in Kyiv on 4 September. The article said Kubilius appeared to be using “KGB” and “GRU” as general references to Russian intelligence agencies.

The comments came alongside other calls for a response to Russian attacks. José Manuel Pinto Teixeira, a Portuguese diplomat and former EU ambassador to Ukraine, said Ukraine had the right to take similar action in Moscow after Russian strikes on central Kyiv. Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned the attack, saying Russia was again disregarding international law and the risks to cultural heritage sites. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged international partners to increase pressure on Russia.
