Russian Missile Strikes Hit Kyiv, Killing 11; Air Defense Struggles

A barrage of Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight, leaving at least 11 people dead and 46 injured. The attacks caused significant damage to residential buildings, with fires erupting in multiple apartment complexes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that one injured man died in the hospital on the morning following the attack. Among the injured were three children. The mayor confirmed damage across four districts of the city, with rescue operations ongoing. Authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into the incident, considering it a potential war crime.

In the Podilskyi district, apartments from the fifth to ninth floors of a building were destroyed. A fire engulfed apartments from the second to fifth floors of a 25-story building in the Darnytskyi district. Debris also caused fires in a 30-story skyscraper in another complex.

Ukraine's air defense system failed to intercept any of the 29 ballistic missiles launched, according to Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the air force. He cited a critical shortage of interceptor missiles for systems like Patriot, noting that Russia is exploiting this vulnerability by focusing on ballistic missile attacks. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow claimed the strikes targeted military-industrial and energy facilities in Kyiv, as well as military airports in several other regions.
