Russian state prevents opposition figure Boris Nadezhdin from running for election

Russian opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin has announced he will not run in the upcoming parliamentary elections in September, citing state obstruction. Nadezhdin, a vocal critic of the war in Ukraine, stated that his ability to conduct legal opposition politics within Russia has been "exhausted."

The primary reason for his disqualification is his recent designation as a "foreign agent" in July. This classification legally bars him from participating in elections. Nadezhdin recently shared a video featuring a photo of the late Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose organizations are deemed "extremist" in Russia. For this action, Nadezhdin was fined for allegedly spreading "extremist symbols."
