Russian strikes damage Ukraine-Romania border crossing, Zelenskyy says

A Russian overnight barrage damaged a Ukrainian border crossing with Romania, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, describing the site as infrastructure used for exports.

The attack also struck a train depot in Kyiv, where seven people died. Ukraine’s state railway said a ballistic missile hit the facility and that six of the dead worked for the railway company. Zelenskyy said the wider attack killed 12 people in the capital and surrounding areas and damaged residential buildings and the facilities of businesses in Kyiv and other regions.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that it shot down five ballistic missiles. Russia also launched 218 drones, of which 187 were intercepted. Ukrainian officials said the interception rate for drones has fallen from levels that once approached 100% as Russia has introduced faster jet-powered drones.

The strikes damaged energy facilities in the Odesa region, leaving “thousands of families” without electricity, Zelenskyy said. He again called for faster deliveries of air-defense systems, saying Ukraine has few interceptors capable of bringing down Russian ballistic missiles.

The attack came amid what Ukrainian officials describe as a wider Russian campaign against logistics and economic infrastructure. Recent strikes have targeted border crossings with Moldova, ports and merchant ships in the Black Sea, supermarkets, warehouses, freight trucks and other commercial facilities. Ukrainian officials said attacks on this infrastructure have reduced supplies of some products in supermarkets and discouraged merchant vessels from approaching the Ukrainian coast.
