Ryanair taunts Argentina again; national airline responds

A social media spat has erupted between Ryanair and Aerolíneas Argentinas, reigniting banter surrounding the 2026 World Cup final. The exchange began when the Irish low-cost airline, known for its irreverent online persona, posted a jab at the Argentine national team.

Ryanair's provocation stemmed from a post by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who noted that Spain's captain Rodri Hernández, named the best player of the 2026 World Cup, was flying commercial on Ryanair from Madrid to Liverpool. Ryanair seized the opportunity, replying to Romano's post with "We only fly winners @Argentina," a clear reference to Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final on July 19.

The national airline of Argentina, Aerolíneas Argentinas, swiftly responded to Ryanair's taunt. They posted a graphic of the Argentine team celebrating their 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, accompanied by the caption: "That we already did. Three times. Been there, done that. Three times." This highlighted Argentina's three World Cup championships, contrasting with Ryanair's implied message.

This latest exchange is part of a series of online provocations involving Ryanair and the Argentine team. During the 2026 World Cup, the airline had already made waves with posts critical of perceived favorable refereeing for Argentina, even coining the term "VARgentina." Following the final loss to Spain, Ryanair continued this theme with a video captioned "maybe next time VARgentina," referencing the controversial refereeing decisions that some critics claimed benefited Argentina's journey to the final.
