Rybakina advances; Fernandez upsets Andreeva at Toronto Masters

Reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina has advanced to the fourth round of the WTA Toronto Masters, securing a victory over American 28th seed Ann Li with a score of 6-2, 7-5. Rybakina, the world number two from Kazakhstan, converted five of her six break point opportunities while saving two of four against Li. She will next face Russia's Liudmila Samsonova in a match that pits two players with a complex recent history, as Samsonova leads their career meetings 4-2, but Rybakina has won their last two encounters.

In another significant match, Canadian Leylah Fernandez delivered a strong performance to defeat French Open winner Mirra Andreeva. Fernandez, the 30th seed, dispatched the 19-year-old Russian 6-1, 6-4, snapping a seven-match losing streak against top-10 opponents. Fernandez highlighted her mental fortitude, stating, "The key for me was to stay positive, stay strong, and to keep being patient." She emphasized her physical readiness for long rallies and matches.

I've put in the work. I know physically I'm strong. I know I can endure long rallies, long matches. So if it's going to take 100 balls to hit to put it in to break her down, then so be it.

Fernandez's next opponent will be Japan's Naomi Osaka, the 11th seed. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, comfortably defeated Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-1, 6-2. Osaka acknowledged the challenge of facing a left-handed player like Fernandez, noting, "It's tough because she's lefty... She has a really good attitude. I've never seen her down. She always keeps fighting."

Meanwhile, American fourth seed Coco Gauff also progressed, defeating Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4. Gauff controlled much of the match, though Sakkari mounted a brief comeback in the second set. Gauff will face 19-year-old Russian Alina Korneeva in her next match. The tournament continues with several high-profile matchups as players vie for advancement.

I'm happy with how I played. Maria is a tough opponent. Her level definitely raised toward the end of that second set but I'm glad I was able to close it out. That last game was a big test for me.
