Sa’ar visits Ecuador, Colombia to strengthen Israel-Latin America ties

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has embarked on a significant diplomatic tour of South America, visiting Ecuador and Colombia with the primary goal of bolstering Israel's engagement across the region. The visit, which began Wednesday, includes high-level meetings with government officials and Sa’ar's representation of Israel at the inauguration of Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella on Friday.

During the inauguration events in Colombia, Sa’ar is scheduled to hold numerous bilateral meetings with political leaders and senior officials from various Latin American nations. This outreach is part of Israel's broader strategy to deepen its diplomatic footprint in the continent. The visit follows a recent agreement between Sa’ar and Colombia's designated foreign minister, Omar Bula Escobar, to relocate Colombia's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a move that signifies a notable strengthening of bilateral relations.

Prior to his arrival in Colombia, Sa’ar made an official visit to Ecuador. This trip marks a historic milestone, being the first visit by an Israeli foreign minister to Ecuador in 44 years. According to the Foreign Ministry, the visit underscores Israel's commitment to renewing and expanding its relationships throughout Latin America through systematic diplomatic efforts.

Sa’ar expressed optimism about the progress made, stating, "We are continuing our effort to bring Latin America closer to Israel. Israel and its citizens will benefit from this in every sphere, diplomatically, economically, and through tourism." The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the tour reflects Israel's ongoing dedication to fostering deeper diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties with both established and emerging partners in the region.
