Sachet alcohol: Recall products or risk closure, NAFDAC warns manufacturers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a directive for manufacturers of banned alcoholic beverages, packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 milliliters, to immediately recall these products nationwide. The agency warned that facilities failing to comply risk closure.

As part of the undertaking, affected manufacturers are required to immediately commence a nationwide recall of all alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml from distributors, warehouses and other points within the supply chain and submit periodic compliance reports to NAFDAC.

NAFDAC affirmed its commitment to enforcing the Federal Government's prohibition on these packaging types, stating the ban is irrevocable. The agency noted that the extended grace period provided to manufacturers to cease production has expired. This enforcement action follows previous reports of illegal production of banned alcoholic drinks despite the government's ban.

NAFDAC has also imposed investigative charges on defaulting companies found to have violated regulatory directives relating to the manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages in prohibited package sizes.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that affected manufacturers must recall all products from distributors, warehouses, and other supply chain points. They are also required to submit periodic compliance reports to NAFDAC. The agency has imposed investigative charges on companies found violating regulatory directives.

The affected companies are required to settle the applicable charges within the stipulated period and comply fully with all regulatory directives issued by the Agency.

Defaulting companies must settle applicable charges and comply fully with all directives. Recalled products will undergo inventory verification and destruction under NAFDAC supervision, with the defaulting manufacturers bearing the full cost. Facilities involved in producing banned alcoholic beverages will require satisfactory evidence of compliance before reopening.
