Sadao border crossing upgrades aim to drive growth in trade and travel

Thailand's Sadao Border Checkpoint, a vital gateway to Malaysia, is set for significant upgrades aimed at enhancing cross-border trade and improving traveler experiences. Located in Songkhla province, it is recognized as the country's most prominent land crossing, responsible for the highest import value among all border checkpoints.

Officials anticipate the checkpoint will process more than six million travelers this year, a figure expected to grow with the planned enhancements. These upgrades include a new passenger terminal with modern technology, such as a contactless body scanner and an X-ray machine, alongside a new cargo terminal for logistics trucks.

Local authorities are also considering an economic stimulus plan for the surrounding area, driven by a delegation of senators from Lower Southern provinces. The plan aims to attract more tourists and boost local revenue. The Sadao Customs House reported that the checkpoint has already handled over 4.2 million travelers since October, with an average of 1.6 million personal cars, 800,000 cars, and 500,000 trucks passing through annually.

Further infrastructure improvements are planned, including the construction of a U-turn point in front of the new Passenger QIC building to ensure traveler safety and reduce service delays. The provincial administration is also advancing a project to build a road linking the new Sadao Border Checkpoint building with the surrounding community, shortening travel time by five kilometers.
