Sadyr Japarov calls Kyrgyzstan's dependence on electricity imports shameful

President Sadyr Japarov has publicly declared Kyrgyzstan's reliance on imported electricity as a source of national shame. He highlighted the paradox of a nation possessing significant water resources still needing to purchase power from neighboring countries.

"Being at the source of the largest water resources, we experience an electricity deficit. This is very shameful," Japarov stated. He pointed out that since gaining independence, Kyrgyzstan has only commissioned a single unit of the Kambaratinskaya HPP-2, with no major hydroelectric power stations constructed. This lack of development in domestic energy production contributes to the ongoing deficit.

Japarov admitted to feeling embarrassed when requesting electricity supplies from neighboring states during winter months, acknowledging that such imports are currently unavoidable. He noted that while approximately 50 small and medium-sized hydroelectric power plants have been commissioned in the last five years, with a similar number under construction, these efforts have not been enough to eliminate the energy deficit.

The president attributed the growing demand for electricity to the construction of new factories, social facilities, and residential buildings. Despite these challenges, Japarov expressed confidence that the problem of electricity deficit can be resolved. He announced that starting July 21st, the Minister of Energy would provide daily, detailed public updates on the sector's situation.
