Sadyr Japarov: I planned not to run in 2027 and support Tashiev

President Sadyr Japarov disclosed that he had previously considered stepping aside from the 2027 presidential election and backing Kamchybek Tashiev, the former head of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS), for the presidency. Japarov shared this in an interview with journalist Ali Toktakunov, explaining his initial plan was to retire from politics after his first term.

He had informed Tashiev of this plan and advised him to prepare, including by managing his associates. However, Japarov later changed his mind upon observing the situation.

Japarov cited the improper conduct of Tashiev's staff and the rapid rise of individuals around him as reasons for his decision. "When the letter from 75 elders appeared and parliament began to be divided into supporters of the general, I called him and said: ‘This is not acceptable. You cannot divide people... So, don’t take it personally, but I am removing you from office,’" the president explained.

Despite removing Tashiev from his post, Japarov emphasized that their friendship, which dates back to 2005, remains intact. He acknowledged Tashiev's five years of service as SCNS chairman, noting his work was generally positive but that he failed to oversee his close circle effectively. "He will remain my friend, but I have no plans to appoint him to any position. He needs to rest, perhaps analyze things and understand where he made mistakes," Japarov said, while also noting Tashiev's significant contributions to the country.
