Safety concerns: Bonn withdraws 60 trams from service

Public transport users in the Bonn region face significant disruptions as the city withdraws a majority of its trams from service. Sixty out of the 75 trams operated by Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) have been taken out of operation due to concerns over premature material fatigue in critical components.

The affected trams, manufactured between the 1970s and 1990s, require more intensive safety inspections. SWB announced that these trams cannot be used temporarily to eliminate potential safety risks. The company's managing director, Anja Wenmarkers, apologized for the inconvenience and expressed hope that the trams could return to service within the following week.

This situation adds to existing transport challenges in the region, following the closure of the Nordbrücke bridge. To mitigate the impact, the Cologne transport authority (KVB) will lend 20 trams to Bonn. However, Cologne will slightly reduce its own service frequency, deeming the adjustment acceptable during the current holiday season.
