Sagrada Familia's Tallest Tower, Christ the Redeemer, Illuminated for First Time

In a historic moment for Barcelona, the Christ the Redeemer tower, the tallest spire of Antoni Gaudí's iconic Sagrada Familia, was illuminated for the first time on Wednesday. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the basilica's ongoing construction, bathing the structure in a new light. The event was accompanied by a spectacular display of fireworks and drones that formed the image of the Catalan architect himself, captivating onlookers and generating viral buzz on social media.

Presiding over the inauguration and blessing was Pope Leo XVI, who delivered a message connecting the basilica's architectural splendor to the teachings of Jesus. "The beauty of this temple encourages us to learn more and more from our Master and Lord the art of living according to his Gospel," the Pope stated. He further emphasized a message of peace, asserting, "We cannot believe in Jesus and promote war. We cannot believe in Jesus and kill the innocent. We cannot believe in Jesus and abandon those who suffer, those who cry, those who flee from misery."

The Christ the Redeemer tower, designed by Gaudí to reach 172.5 meters, stands slightly shorter than Barcelona's highest point, Montjuïc. The construction involved a massive crane, with the operator's cabin positioned 140 meters high, capable of extending to 200 meters. The assembly of the cross atop the tower, a 7.25-meter-tall, 24-ton structure, required a dedicated team of workers. The tower itself is slated to open to the public in 2028, following the completion of the interior nave and the installation of a glass elevator. Visitors will need to ascend the final stretch to the cross on foot.

Gaudí began his work on the Sagrada Familia in 1883, dedicating 42 years of his life to the masterpiece. Before his death, he had completed key sections recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites: the crypt, the Nativity facade, and four bell towers. The recent illumination and inauguration of the Christ the Redeemer tower represent a significant step forward in realizing Gaudí's ambitious vision for the basilica, a symbol of Barcelona and a testament to enduring faith and architectural innovation.
