Saint Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Says He Is ‘Fully Active and Stable’ After Stroke

Terrance Drew, the prime minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, said he is “fully active, conscious and in stable condition” after suffering a stroke. The 49-year-old leader made the statement in a five-minute address to the nation while receiving treatment in southern Florida.

Drew said he was initially treated on the French island of Martinique. He and his wife then traveled to Florida on the advice of medical specialists from Saint Kitts and Nevis and Martinique for additional tests. He said there was “nothing alarming to report” at this stage, but doctors were continuing their investigations.

The prime minister described persistent nausea that progressed to vomiting, along with pronounced pain on the left side of his neck, a mild headache and dizziness. He later felt unsteady while standing and had difficulty maintaining his balance and walking. “I understood that these were symptoms that should not be ignored,” he said.

At this stage, there is nothing alarming to report, but the doctors are continuing their investigations and I believe it is important to allow them to conduct a thorough analysis.

Drew did not disclose the specific nature of his condition. He said he would report on his health after the medical examinations were completed. He thanked doctors in Saint Kitts and Nevis, Martinique and the United States, as well as citizens who sent prayers, messages of support and wishes for a full recovery.

I understood that these were symptoms that should not be ignored.

Drew has led the government of the two-island federation since Aug. 6, 2022. He said the experience had been a wake-up call and urged people to listen when their bodies signal that something is wrong.
