Salon project lets Dublin teens 'chase their dreams'

Hair Together, a unique social enterprise in Dublin, is successfully blending salon skills training with vital wellbeing and self-development programs for young people. Located in Ballymun, the initiative empowers individuals by equipping them with hairdressing and barbering skills, alongside crucial personal growth activities. Since its founding in 2019 by local stylist Eileen McHugh, Hair Together has focused on creating new pathways to education and employment for its participants.

McHugh, who received a 2026 Dublin Lord Mayor's Award, founded the enterprise after her own positive life changes through hairdressing, which helped her overcome addiction. She aims to instill self-belief and confidence in the young people she works with. "You can’t change what’s happening at home for people or what’s happening in their environment, but you can make them stronger and give them the little tools and the belief to grow and chase their dreams," McHugh stated.

The enterprise operates a trading-for-impact salon, which opened earlier this year, supporting its workshops and programs. This model allows participants to gain practical experience in a real salon environment. Hair Together's summer workshops have been particularly active, showcasing the vibrant learning atmosphere and the progress participants are making in developing both professional and personal skills.
