Salt Namane's First PhD Graduate Reflects on His Journey

In a landmark achievement for the Salt Namane Karimui District and Simbu Province, Dr. Nebare Poi has etched his name in history as the first individual from the region to attain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). His graduation in Geomatics from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UOT) is a moment of immense pride and inspiration for his community.

I started this journey as a boy who walked long distances just to sit in a classroom. With a dream in mind, the strength of those who supported me, and God’s grace, I have received my PhD.

Dr. Poi's journey is a powerful testament to resilience and the pursuit of dreams against all odds. He shared his reflections, recalling his early days as a boy who trekked long distances simply to attend classes. This profound accomplishment, he states, is not solely his own but belongs to his family, his district, and everyone who believed in him and offered unwavering support throughout his academic endeavors.

He specifically highlighted the crucial role of his elder brother, Sil Poi, whose steadfast belief and sacrifices were instrumental in his perseverance. Dr. Poi also extended his gratitude to his children for their companionship during his studies and acknowledged the hopes and struggles of his extended families within the district, seeing himself as a symbol of their aspirations for a brighter future. The mentorship of Professor Jana at UOT's School of Surveying and Land Studies was also credited for guiding him through the challenging research phases.
