Same-Sex Couples Adopted Nine Children in Saxony Last Year

In Saxony, Germany, nine children were adopted by same-sex couples in 2025, representing a small fraction of the total adoptions in the state. Official figures from the State Statistical Office show that out of 232 adoptions, less than four percent involved same-sex couples.

All nine children adopted by same-sex couples were under the age of three. Six of these adoptions were by male couples, and three were by female couples. The statistical office noted that the data also encompasses adoptive parents who identified their gender as 'diverse' or 'unspecified.' For reporting purposes, these individuals were randomly assigned to either the male or female category.

In contrast, heterosexual couples adopted a total of 72 children and adolescents in the same period. The majority of adoptions in Saxony are carried out by single individuals, according to the statistics. The report highlights the ongoing trend of same-sex couples participating in adoption, albeit at a lower rate compared to heterosexual couples and single adopters.
