Samoan government withdraws support for national rugby union

A significant rift has widened between the Samoan government and its national rugby union, Lakapi Samoa, culminating in the government's decision to withdraw all funding and assistance. Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced the move, stating that months of consultations and efforts to find an amicable resolution have failed to address the issues plaguing Samoan rugby.

Following months of consultations, and space given to find an amicable resolution to the issues within Samoan rugby, the government has decided to withdraw its recognition and support of the national rugby union, Lakapi Samoa.

The Prime Minister had previously expressed dissatisfaction with Lakapi Samoa's administration, accusing the union of financial mismanagement and contributing to the sport's decline. He had even threatened to establish a rival body. The government's statement emphasized that ample time was given to Lakapi Samoa to resolve internal divisions and address concerns raised by former players and coaches, as well as the deteriorating international standing of Samoan rugby.

Despite the withdrawal of support from Lakapi Samoa, the government affirmed its commitment to the future development of rugby in the country. It plans to announce new strategies for supporting the sport, potentially channeling assistance to a newly registered Samoa Rugby and Football Union. This new entity was slated for a launch this week, though it has been postponed.

The government decision is to assist reset Samoan rugby and government has supported the major development pathways and financial assistance already in the pipeline to assist the future development of rugby in the country.

Lakapi Samoa board chairman Namulauulu Sami Leota expressed concern that the creation of a rival union could be disastrous for the sport. He stressed that Lakapi Samoa is the internationally recognized governing body by World Rugby and warned that administrative conflicts could negatively impact players, clubs, and their international opportunities. World Rugby has indicated that the matter is an internal issue for Samoa to resolve.
