San Juan Bautista brings together 199 students for Omapa departmental round

San Juan Bautista hosted the departmental round of Paraguay's National Mathematics Olympiad, bringing together 199 students from approximately 50 educational institutions across Misiones' 10 districts.

The event, organized by the Multidisciplinary Organization for Supporting Teachers and Students, known as Omapa, is the third stage of the competition after institutional and zonal rounds. It promotes mathematical talent and logical reasoning among children and young people.

For students in the children's category, from second through sixth grade, the departmental round is the final stage. Students in the youth category, from seventh grade through the third year of secondary education, are competing for places in the national final.

We have many talents, and, thank God, we have this opportunity for children with talent and a vocation for mathematics to demonstrate their abilities and skills in this area.

Departmental coordinator Gustavo Javier Medina Ortiz said Misiones has an estimated quota of 40 to 50 places in the national round. Advancement will depend on scores and the national cutoff. The final will be held on October 11 in Concepción and is expected to bring together 400 to 450 students from across Paraguay. Results from the departmental round are due between September 23 and 24.

Departmental Education Director Felisa López attended the competition and praised the commitment of families, teachers and coordinators. Medina also highlighted the opportunity for students with talent and a vocation for mathematics to demonstrate their abilities.

The results and scores will matter greatly, because the cutoff is set nationally to determine who qualifies for the final round.
